Portable Hydrogen Fuel Cells
PEM FUEL CELLS
Basic Principle
(1) Hydrogen reaches the positive pole through pipeline or gas guide board.
(2) Under the effect of the anode catalyst, one hydrogen molecule dissociates into two hydrogen protons and releases two electrons.
The anodic reaction: H2 → 2H+ + 2e.
(3) Oxygen (or air) reaches the negative pole through pipeline or gas guide board on the other side of the fuel cell. Under the effect of the cathode catalyst, oxygen molecule and hydrogen ion react with the electron which reaches the negative pole by external circuit to form water.
The cathodic reaction: 1/2O2 + 2H+ + 2e → H2O.
Total chemical reaction: H2 + 1/2O2 = H2O.
(4) The electron forms direct current in the external circuit.
Therefore, as long as the hydrogen and oxygen are continuously provided to positive and negative pole of the fuel cell, the electric energy will be continuously outputted to external circuit equipment.
